Out of My Mind by Sharon M Draper is about an eleven-year-old girl named Melody, who has cerebral palsy. Melody is a beyond smart kid with the ability to remember almost anything. The only problem is, is that she is nonverbal, so nobody knows just how smart she is. Melody also cannot walk or write. This story shows Melody's life and what it is like for her growing up.

Melody is not able to speak until she discovers a computer system that can help give her a voice. After this, people learn just how smart Melody truly is. Melody proves many people wrong all throughout the book. It appears that many children are a bit jealous of Melody's smarts and often feel it is unfair. Even though Melody has more to overcome each day than most.

This book was great. Once I began reading, I could not put it down. I finished it quite quickly. It was emotional at times. This is a realistic fiction. I thought it showed the life of person with a disability well. It provided the reader insight on what one's life with a disability is like. I would recommend this book for 5th grade and up. I think this could be a great book to use as whole group read aloud. I think there is so much to be taught from this book and allows for great discussions.
