Ron Spence, one of Tasmania’s leading referees in the 1960s and 1970s, has passed away in Hobart at the age of 90.
Ron was born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, England, in 1932.
He played schoolboy football and then moved to Boston in Lincolnshire, where he played in a youth league.
He served in the Royal Air Force and, after being demobbed in 1955, returned to Middlesbrough and joined the local referees’ association.
He refereed in that region of England until he emigrated to Tasmania in 1968.
He continued his refereeing career in Tasmania and rose to be one of the top officials in the State.
He refereed Tasmania against the visiting English club Sunderland at Grove Road (the present-day KGV Park) on 23 May 1976. His linesmen were Jack Johnston, who went on to be a FIFA referee, and Basil Masters.
Ron was in charge of many top games in Tasmania, including State finals and Ampol Cup Finals.
